Wildlife sanctuary was declared in 1960. It is situated between 240 3.3 And 240 .43’ North latitude and 720 .38’ and 720 .53’ East longitude. The forest area is 328 sq km. it is in form of detached hill of Aravali range rising suddenly from the flat plains like a rocky island laying off the sea cost of a continent. In shape it is long and narrow but the top spread out in to a picturesque plateau nearly 1220 M above the sea with about 19 km in length and 5-8 km in breadth the natural features are very old and the slopes especially on the western and northern sides are extremely precipitous. On the East and South, the outline is more broken by spurs with deep valleys in between.
The gigantic blocks of syenitic rocks, towering along the crest of the hill are especially striking, being is cases so weather worn as to present the most fanciful and wearied shapes, while in others they appear so slightly balanced as to be in danger of rolling down. The configuration of land is hilly and rugged with high altitude variation ranging from 300 M to 1772 Meters.
